Abstract

|
Recently, epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) has been examined in many tumors. As in other tumors, the role of EGFR in progress of growth and differentiation in cervical neoplasia remains largely unknown. In this study we investigated the
expression
of EGFR by EGFR-mRNA in situ hybridization method in the neoplastic process of squamous cell epithelium of the uterine cervix(normla, CIN, and cervical carcinoma).
Normal cervical squamous epithelium showed predominantly basal and parabasal expression of EGFR and its expression decreased as the cells became increasingly differentiated toward the surface of the epithelium. In contrast, EGFR was expressed
moderately
to intensively throughout the entire thickness of the epithelium by undifferentiated squamous cells in CIN and carcinoma in situ. In the cervical carcinoma all malignant cells were found to have moderate staining for EGFR may be involved in the
initial
stage of tumorigenesis of cervical squamous epithelium and that EGFR expression may be related to the differentiation or dedifferentiation of cervical squamous carcinoma.
